James 1:13 says, “13 Let no one say when he is tempted, “I am being tempted by God,” for God cannot be tempted with evil, and he himself tempts no one.” No one can blame God for their actions. Consider Adam and Eve in the garden. Adam tried to blame God for his action. He argued that his sin was God’s fault because God gave him Eve, but Adam’s blame-shifting and lame excuses did not persuade God to take responsibility for Adam’s choices.
God did not tempt Adam or Eve. Adam and Eve were completely taken care of by God in the garden.
- God gave them life.
- He gave them His friendship.
- He gave them each other.
- He gave them a great place to live.
- He gave them freedom to move about the garden He had custom-made for their enjoyment and
- He gave them all the food they could eat.
If God was anything, He was unimaginably generous. He was not a tempter.
James tells in verse 13b, “God cannot be tempted with evil, and he himself tempts no one.” This phrase could also be translated to say that God is “Untemptable”[1] or that he “has no vulnerability to evil.”[2] God is perfectly good and it is impossible for Him to traffic in the arena of evil. God’s character is important to understand so that we don’t place the blame on the one who is utterly without sin.
