In James 1:14, it says, “14 But each person is tempted when he is lured and enticed by his own desire.”
Some people wonder, “What about Satan, James? In the Garden of Even, didn’t Satan tempt Eve? Wasn’t it his fault?” Satan may be responsible for luring us into sin, but the Bible is very clear that even Satan does not force us into temptation. 1 Corinthians 10:13 says, “13 No temptation has overtaken you that is not common to man. God is faithful, and he will not let you be tempted beyond your ability, but with the temptation he will also provide the way of escape, that you may be able to endure it.”
Satan might entice us (he might bait the hook), but the choice to take the bait is always ours. Eve “saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was a delight to the eyes.” She saw the tree. It looked good to her. She desired it. Then, she made the choice to eat the fruit when she was enticed by her own desires to have that fruit.
Eve desired the fruit, she justified her actions in her own mind and then she walked over to the tree. She put herself in a position to willfully do the only thing she was forbidden to do.
Neither Satan nor God forced Eve to walk to the tree. She went there as an act of her own free will. Her actions were deliberate and intentional. Satan may have baited the hook, but Eve willingly took the bait… and then offered it to Adam.
