What God is Like

Our country was founded by men who had profound convictions about what God is like.  With the birthday of our nation being celebrated this weekend, Bible-teaching churches have the opportunity to celebrate their great influence and contribution to our nation as well.

Our Founding Fathers had some strong opinions about what God is like.  Those ideas were often formed from the Bible.  (However, some of our Founding Fathers formed opinions about God based on something other than the scripture.)  Never-the-less, our country was founded by men whose world-view was shaped by their view of what God is like.

A pastor named AW Tozer once said, “What comes into our minds when we think about God is the most important thing about us.”

Now just because someone has a concept of God does not mean that concept is biblically accurate or even biblically compatible.  Here is where the church has historically stepped in to the culture.

It is the job of the church to open up the scriptures and teach people about what the Bible has to say about God.  One of the church’s greatest contributions to our country, to our culture and to our neighbors is how it has historically communicated a high, biblical view of God’s attributes.

Paul, one of the Bible’s writers, told Christians to take every opportunity to talk with people about what God is like.  He was even asking people to pray that “God may open to us a door for the word, to declare the mystery of Christ…” (Colossians 4:2b)

The history of mankind will show that there has never been a people group who has risen above its idea of what God is like.  In our country, the over-riding idea of ‘what God is like’ is established, upheld and promoted by the church.

When the church begins to wrestle with the weighty matters related to God’s intertwining attributes, it not only improves our theology but it also dramatically impacts how we speak about God to our friends and neighbors.

As the church has a higher view of God, so our country has a higher view of Him.  For this reason, the best way the church can demonstrate its love for this great country is by more passionately pursuing a deeper understanding of the awesome God of the Bible. On this 4th of July, may God bless this great country of ours as the church continues to promote God’s greatness!
